Something About our students - FUDŠ

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Svitlana Buko about our students:

"Excited and inspired by my adult students of MA Program in Intercultural Management (Fudš Sass): we had a first lecture for this semester and started with the quick question about background and prior intercultural experience. Why? Because One thing that I try to do with adult learners is to tap into what they already know, and link it to the theoretical frameworks of intercultural communication as a first inquiry step and link it to the local realities (local-national focus).

Here are some quick fun facts (really amazing group!):

- For two international students from Serbia and Bosnia it was normal to share that their parents speak Russian (part of the former Yugoslavia educational system focus).

- For the students who used to live in different parts of Slovenia before (North – Koroška, Štajerska), we explored that German was a more common second language due to the Austria border proximity (geographical proximity/determination).

- For our local team from the border IT-SLO border we explored the differences in generational linguistic capacities – older team members (in their 30s 40s) shared how their grandparents spoke Italian to them (as kids) and how they watched Italian cartoons during the Yugoslavia times, and younger students (20s) reflected on the presence of English as a dominant (linguistic determination linked to the differences in social experiences of different generations).

In small team discussions I asked them to apply basic intercultural frameworks to define how their life was impacted by the external society factors and proximity of other cultures. The discussion was great and the team tapped into the tools and theories for unpacking intercultural encounters from the scientific perspective vs. personal storytelling. This Discovery-based learning is one of the pillars of the andragogy. So grateful for the opportunity to work with the unique team and explore diversity of cultures and languages together! #teaching #interculturalmanagement #fuds #slovenia #androgogy #cultures #multilingustm #andragogy #storytelling #exploring #laboratory #experimentalteaching #discoverybasedteaching Course "Business and Economic Culture" (Faculty of Applied Social Studies in Nova Gorica (Fakulteta za uporabne družbene študije v Novi Gorici)"
