How can technology help with fact checking in the political arena? Do politicians actually speak the truth or do they simply tell lies now and apologise later, after the fact? With the latest tool and advancement in technology, , Fact Rank can fact check everything being said in real time. Fact Rank is a new online tool that automatically detects ‘checkable’ claims made by politicians in parliamentary debates or tweets therefore enabling fact-checkers to work much at a much faster speed than ever before. It works by scanning a text and identifying the sentences which are factual and relevant: that is to say, they contain a fact – which may or may not be true – and which are relevant to a large group of people or are politically interesting, for example. In the 3rd Expert Talk of our Series, The Flamboyant Fake, Jan Jagers discusses how this new tool can change the game of real time fact checking in the political arena and hold politicians more accountable than ever before.
